Professional Services Firm Prevents Costly Workplace Claims Through Ergonomics Training

Not all workplace injuries occur in factories or warehouses.

A rapidly growing professional services firm employing over 500 office workers across Canada was facing a different but equally costly problem.

Employees were reporting increasing levels of neck pain, back strain, and repetitive stress injuries. Several workers had filed claims related to musculoskeletal disorders, and absenteeism linked to ergonomic issues was rising.

The company’s HR department initially believed the problem was related to equipment.

New chairs and adjustable desks were purchased, but the complaints continued.

A workplace ergonomics review revealed the real issue.

Employees had received almost no training on how to use ergonomic equipment properly. Many workers were sitting for long periods without breaks, positioning monitors incorrectly, or working from laptops in awkward positions.

Without training, even well-designed ergonomic workstations were not preventing injuries.

The organization implemented SafetyNow to address the problem.

Employees were assigned ergonomics training modules through the LMS. These courses explained how repetitive movements, poor posture, and workstation setup contribute to musculoskeletal injuries.

Supervisors also used SafetyNow training kits during team meetings to reinforce key concepts such as proper monitor placement, posture adjustments, and the importance of movement throughout the day.

Workers were encouraged to conduct self-assessments of their workstations and make small adjustments.

The training also introduced early reporting practices. Employees were encouraged to report discomfort early before minor symptoms developed into more serious injuries.

The impact was noticeable within months.

Employees began making simple ergonomic improvements to their workspaces. Many workers started using standing desk options, adjusting monitor heights, and taking brief movement breaks throughout the day.

Within one year the company recorded a significant reduction in ergonomic-related claims.

Absenteeism related to musculoskeletal discomfort decreased by nearly 25 percent.

Employee satisfaction surveys showed improved perceptions of workplace wellness.

HR leaders also reported another unexpected benefit.

Managers became more aware of the link between workplace design, employee health, and productivity.

The HR Director described the outcome.

“Ergonomics was something we thought we understood. SafetyNow helped us realize that awareness and training are just as important as equipment.”
